Studio Runk is a Silk Screen Printing studio based in Brighton. Our aim is to create exciting hand-pulled prints of your favourite photographs.
Firstly, you send us your chosen photograph. We’ll take a look at it, and discuss with you which style of print will be most suitable (More detail on these styles can be found at the bottom of this page).
We’ll then do a mock up print in Photoshop and then email it over to you. If you're happy with how it looks, we’ll get started with the printing!
Using a laserprinter, we print each photoshop layer onto transparent acetate which will then be exposed using UV light onto an emulsion coated silk screen. Each layer's printed one at a time. The number of layers involved will depend on the photograph.
We specialise in three different types of printing methods
Halftone Print - This is an ideal method for photographs featuring people as it creates the right contrast required for facial detail and clothing. 3-5 Colour
Posterisation Print - This method is used to create a continuous gradation effect which was used to create posters in the 1960s. Each colour is layered over the top of the other with the lightest colours printed first (Or at the back). The image of Whitby Abbey on our home page is a posterisation.
5-7 Colour Separated Posterisation - This is a better option for prints that would require colours from opposite ends of the colour wheel. The photograph is split up into individual sections in Photoshop. Each of these sections is printed separately. See the image of the Lake District for this process.
